View Full Version : Who manages DNS when I use a different registrar?

Seemingly simple question but I'm having a hard time figuring this out. If I use a a different domain registrar (like GoDaddy for example) and I point the domain to host here (using HostMonster nameservers)

ns1.hostmonster.com
ns2.hostmonster.com

Then if I have to make a A/CNAME record...do I do it through HostMonster (by opening a ticket) or can I still change it at GoDaddy.

Logically I would think if I point to HostMonster nameservers, then they now are now managing the DNS (and therefore are the ones to go to for A/CNAME changes).

I've gotten different answers from different people. Even emailed hostmonster support but wasn't confident they gave me the right answer.

Someone who is knowledgable please let me know what the correct answer is.

have you tried using their live help to see if the answer you get there is the same as your email? how did they respond to you in the email by the way. i don't see why they would try to mislead you

Everytime I get on live help I just sit there for like 15 minutes waiting so I just log off....

Here's the email though

My question through my email....

I know that for domains registered through you (of which I have multiple) I have to contact your support team to make CNAME/A edits....I understand that part fine.

here's my question though...if I register through another registrar say GoDaddy or Network Solutions, and then I point the nameservers to the Hostmonster nameservers and assign the domain to my Hostmonster account.

In that case do I have to still email you to make CNAME/A changes? Or since it's registered through someone else would I have to go through the registrar to make the DNS changes...?

Their response..

You would need to contact the current registrar for anything like that.
If you have any other questions or need help please let us know.

I actually went ahead and just tested this out (registered a free co.cc domain with another registrar and pointed it to HostMonster nameservers) . As expected HostMonster support successfully made the CNAME change to that 3rd party registered domain (actually getting them to make the change took 3 unanswered support tickets and 2 phone call mind you -- but that's beside the point)

I'm not sure why the very first email I sent out about this to HostMonster support said this has to be done with the registrar....but seems like they were wrong.
