Hi,
I'm pretty fed up with my current host, so I'm trying to find a new one.
Looking on the net, Host Monster seem to get good reviews etc.
Just a few things I would like to hear from some of the members.
A bit of a concern is ping times. I'm seem to see 180-200ms ping times to www.hostmonster.com from the UK, and that is pretty constant over the past 3-4 days. Is that normal from the UK, as its quite slow?
Also, looking through this forum, is it true that support don't seem to work on US Holidays?
Not a great situation, as that is always when things go wrong :(
My main problems with my current hosts, are that their support is rubbish. Any time they have to do anything to my account the get it wrong, and then my site can be down for 2-3 days. They never call back. After getting through to them on the phone (to somewhere in outer Mongolia), they really don't know what they are talking about, and its always 'forwarded to 2nd line support', who never get back to you :(
Would just like to hear from some of you guys,
Thanks,
Rob.

Hi Rob,
As nobody has replied yet, let me try & pitch in. I don't think the ping is too high for Hostmonster usually (unless you live in some remote island of the world), so UK should not at all be a problem.
About the support, I have always received good support & thankfully never had any problem on a US holiday (I don't know if they offer support on a US holiday or not). I am also out of US.
Since you are planning to join hostmonster, here is a coupon link to get Hostmonster hosting for $3.95/mo instead of $6.95/mo.

Let me know if U have other questions.
Cheers,
NG
Being from NZ, one of the problems I find is that I believe that HM schedule maintainence/backups at times when it would make sense where the data centre is (i.e. in the US). For instance a lot of the time I've had problems its not been during the late hours in NZ, its been primetime type hours...
Just something to bear in mind.

You know there are some good dedicated servers out there that make you pay for backups, i was quite suprised of that and that hostmonster does it for free so it aint all bad.
I didn't say it was bad - just pointing out that depending on your expectations, you might be disappointed is your site is down in the hours you're expecting it :)

Thanks all for your replies guys.
Bit concerned about down time....
How long is it down while they back it up?
My current hosts backup things for us, and I've never noticed that my site is down during that time.
So hostmonster actually take the site down to back it up then?
Thanks,
Rob.

No.. not at all..
But my suggestion is to make it a habbit to backup your site regularly yourself...

Ah, ok, thanks... sorry, reading r2b2's post, it sounded like they take your site down automatically to back it up.
Rob.
Sorry if my post put you wrong. My main point was regarding outages due to maintenance. Backups, of course, don't usually take the site out. But I'd like to point out that on one occasion an outage of the server I'm on was blamed on a backup (a while back now but still :D )
