Hi y'all,
I am thinking of getting a dedicated ip address so that I can set up a region in osgrid. Has anyone done this sucessfully?
If so any tips/

I don't think it is a great idea on shared hosting. You would be better of using a dedicated server or a VPS account. But I am no master on Opensim or Osgrid. Read this blogpost for a good description & experience with tips.

Thanks for the link navsguardar - very helpful but I think it's gonna be too technical.
I have tried setting opensim up with my home oc as a server with much frustration and no sucess.
:(
I'll keep trying - it does sound like upgrading to a dedicated ip is the first step

Yes I guess, getting a dedicated IP is the first step. Also you need to take care that you don not consume a lot of resources on shared hosting as this might result in your account being suspended.

Hi,
I don't think I would use up too many resources - it's not a commercial project ( just for fun/creativity) and the only people that would be logging in would be my self and a couple of friends.
Still not sure what to do - even after upgrading to dedicated ip I will need to install and configure opensim software which I don't hve much confidence in doing.
I have discovered some organisations that offer configured server space - including Amazon which have a pay-per-use scheme and give you your own island ("say it with an island"). This, or one of their competitors, will work out very cheaply as I don't log on for that many hours per month.

Yes definitely.. With AWS the minimum your one server instance would run shall be 720 hrs in a month. You definitely know what Amazon is gonna charge you for that. AWS is a terrific service but Cloud Computing is only for people who are using apps to scale & scale into large numbers.
I will definitely not suggest that for your requirements.

Thanks for the advice which I welcome, but after thinking I had found a solution I am back to square one. Oh well :(
One of these days I will sign up to something and have a go. I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks for the help - If you do like Second Life type virtualization without the monthly expense I do recommend osgrid - good fun although not too many users at present.
All the best
Bernie
