Hallo Forum,
need some help, going to buy an ebook website and this is what I need for hosting. Honest I have no idea, what that all means.
"You will need a Linux web server with MySQL and PHP4 or above with register globals turned on.
You will also need a lot of webspace for storing all the ebooks online.
A web server with a CPanel Control Panel, PHPMyAdmin and MySQL database is RECOMMENDED.
It is designed for CPanel and is NOT guaranteed to work properly on any other type of hosting set-up."
Do I get this at hostmonster??
Thanks a lot!!

You should be fine for everything that is required if you want to buy this thing and host it at Hostmonster.
I want to make you aware of something though .... register globals ....
Hostmonster runs PHP5 servers and register globals is turned off by default. You can turn them back on with a bit of configuration, but it is highly recommended that you keep them turned off!!!
I'm not an expert at coding with php ... yet, but it is my opinion, along with many people I trust, that software that requires register globals to be turned on is software that was written by lazy programmers.
I would encourage you to run, don't walk, away from this software and look for something else that does not require register globals.
Further, I am highly suspicious of any software that you have to "buy" that requires register globals. It is probably one of the worst things you can do to your site as far as security is concerned.
I would question the need to have it turned on and ask if you really need this particular peice of software. The security holes it will make on your site will probably cost you more in the long run.

I agree with shadmego, the security loop holes in your site will be huge with global registers turned on

Some of the reasons why having register_globals enabled can be found here http://us.php.net/register_globals
As it says, keep in mind that enabling register_globals isn't inherently insecure, but that having register_globals enabled allows for poorly written code to allow for more security exploits than when register_globals is off.
If you aren't too familiar with PHP or you aren't confident that the author of your program knows what he's doing, then you're probably best leaving register_globals turned off.
Could you maybe post a link to the software you would like to install? Maybe somebody could suggest something else that would suit your needs.

That is really interesting! Here is the link:
http://www.parlot.com/product.php?products_id=98&sessionid=c7b54334834239115daf173d1adebdbc
By the way, another question:
What about tax, I am an expat living in Malaysia, do I have to pay tax in the country the server is located?
Thanks a lot!

No, you don't have to pay any tax imposed by the country (United States) the server is located in
I'll keep my eyes open for another script similar to what you've posted.

This product looks like oscommerse that has been pre-populated with items for sale.
It makes sense because oscommerse requires register globals. I don't have time now, but I would check their website to make sure their program still requires register globals. If not, then you are buying an old product and should look at trying to find something similar that is more recent.

yea shadmego that is an oscommerce site build and I dont think having registered globals is required unless its for a specific contribution, email them and ask them what contributions they have installed but for 30 bux thats not bad it took me months to build my first os commerce site
