Yeah hey guys does hostmonster support mod rewrite rules, i've done stuff like this in the past but what i'm doing this time is a little different i've been trying to use this http://www.generateit.net/mod-rewrite/ but i'm using joomla also you think that could be the problem because whatever it is, it's not working.

Of course it does. That's what .htaccess is used for.

Are you trying to generate better permalinks? Joomla should come with its own .htaccess file for doing this. If it doesn't automatically update the .htaccess files automatically, you will have to do so manually.

I know this isn't the joomla support forum but you never get a response from the joomla guys so i have to go where i can for help, but i'm trying this in my .htaccess file

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^pictures/$ /index.php?option=com_rsgallery2&Itemid=55 [L]

But nothing happens, i'm using joomla 1.5 and all the SEO tools for 1.5 suck so i'm trying to make my urls cleaner but i can't figure out why it's not working.

What do you mean i'll have to update my .htaccess manually, i have joomla running fine but some extensions have really long urls and i'm trying to make them look nicer.

try using sh404sef. Writing your own rewrite rules for Joomla! is going to be next to impossible because of the structure of the program.

There are also some components that were not written very well for mod_rewrite rules, and I believe that rsgallery2 is one of them. The best you can hope for for these components is to wait for a plugin to be written for said component.

Check this link out: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/2380/details

And then check out the extensions-specific category to see if there are plugins for your components.

Yeah shadmego thanks for the response, appreciated. However i'm currently using that one and i'm currently still a subscriber to Jpromoter but Jpromoter do not do the 1.5 ver yet which is disappointing cause it was great and never really knew how much i would miss it till it was gone. But the guys that develop HWD components for joomla have been impressing me alot recently and have just released an image gallery, however it's still in the early beta stages so it's not useable at the moment but i guess i'll have to wait for about 6 months till he gets it nearly there and ask for a sh404sef extension from them which they have done in the past and then jump on that :)

I'll have to check out JPromoter ... I haven't played with that yet. As far as the gallery, I have the same one installed on my site and hate the url's it creates ... I will have to keep up on this new gallery you mentioned.

Hopefully it will have Community Builder support .....

Yeah here is the link to HWD http://hwdmediashare.co.uk/ i hang out there from time to time, it's mainly a video component but their developing an image gallery called photoshare but you get to try out all the betas as a member. Photoshare is still under early development but shows pretty impressive capabilities with photo social networking. But i asked the developers this week will they make it slightly like rsgallery 2 so i have to wait back from them to reply. But i remember i asked them once a concern i had with HWD they took my ftp details and made the complete backend different and what i asked for without having to twist their arm so they impressed me the 2nd i signed up with them. So i'm kinda looking forward for them to get back to me and hopefully i can move on from Rsgallery2 + he knows how to make sefs for sh404SEF and does it without even being asked to do it so i'm kinda excited for his reply to be honest.

IF you want a sucky looking demo of HWDphotoshare you can find it hidden on my site here on my own little beta adventure Don't be put off my versions crap compared to what it looked like when i got it, most of it's disabled. but i would recommend HWD to anybody who was interested since the lead developer (Davros) has been great support towards me. Heres an official demo below but it isn't carved in stone he might change the look if enough people request it which i'm doing at the moment.
