Is there a way for us to install this on our shared hosting accounts?

I do not believe this is possible within the shared hosting environment. After skimming through the Linux installation instructions, there seems to be a few locations that we, as webspace owners, do not have access to.

Google has an XML Sitemap Generator for WordPress which I know works, since I use it on my website.

Google also lists a few other ways (http://code.google.com/p/sitemap-generators/wiki/SitemapGenerators) in which you can generate valid sitemaps.
