I notice that when I go to the SimpleScripts page, it seems that you can install 2.7, but when you click on "install now", it defaults to 2.65 - when will this be updated to the latest release?

The version that SimpleScripts claims to have is Wordpress v2.7 RC1. This is not the final version of Wordpress v2.7. It is a release candidate. The final version is set for release later on this month, although it has already been implemented on Wordpress.com.

Since the final release date is near you may want to hold off until it is available through Wordpress.org (http://wordpress.org) so you won't have to worry about going through the subsequent upgrade process (http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended). Personally, I find installing Wordpress the manual way (http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions) allows one to learn what makes Wordpress run; after all, if it is going to power your website you might as well have an idea of what is going on in the background so you can tackle problems when they arise.

On that note, you are not tethered to SimpleScripts when it comes to installing software. You can always download software separately to your PC, upload it to your webspace and follow the instructions as found in the documentation.

Wordpress is easy to install. For reasons Falcon1986 pointed to, it's probably a good idea to install Wordpress the regular way. It's not difficult.

Personally, I would avoid using Fantastico for several reasons (http://www.howtospoter.com/web-20/wordpress/3-reasons-not-to-use-fantastico-for-wordpress).

If you must use a 1-click method of installation SimpleScripts is a better way to go.
