phpbb help with changes

I am very new to web site creation in general and I just added a forum to my site at lusciouslandscaping.net. I would like to alter my forum in regards to background colors and how do I change "A short text to describe your forum" so that it actually does contain a short text to describe my forum. Is there a good tutorial on how to alter phpbb? any help would be greatly appreciated.
