Hello, I have just created my website and I would like to know how to get rid of the index/html that is appearing after my site name.

Where abouts is it in your browser? The URL or bar elsewhere?

Perhaps a link is necessary...

Its just the way your linking to it with the "Home" hyperlink, just change it to
http://sharonhaynes.net/ instead of
http://sharonhaynes.net/index.html

There's no real way to get rid of it as all folders need an index.html or variation.. Well not all but yeah.
