I'm getting this error when I connect to the mail server using Thunderbird...

"unable to verify the identity of host24.hostmonster.com as a trusted site."

I did not use to get it before. Why is that?

I'm trying to use Thunderbird 3 Alpha 1 and get the following error:

host199.hostmonster.com:993 uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.

(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

I'm not able to get around this at all.

This also happens for me on Outlook 2007 for host201.hostmonster.com

If you want to use SSL to connect to your email accounts for Hostmonster, you will have to accept the certificate associated with the server.

You have to decide if the risk of accepting a certificate without a known/valid issuer is worth the risk.

Once you accept the certificate, then you won't get those errors, but if the cert originated from a malicous source, then you are opening yourself up for disaster.

I recommend contacting Hostmonster Support and asking them why they don't have valid certificates from trusted Certificate Authorities for their mail servers. I fear the answer will be either:

1. "I don't know"
2. "To save money"

To me, neither of these reasons are valid, but then, I'm not on staff so I can only guess as to what they will say.

If you want to use secure email, your best option is to purchase a dedicated IP and set up your own SSL certificate.

You should move your e-mail accounts to Google Apps
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/editions.html

I did. It's a bit tricky to make the transfer. But once done it rocks.

Here's the (free) standard edition link, to Google Apps, as it's easy to overlook it on the main page:
