Does anyone know what is the reason to send passport or ID doc to HM? I am being asked to send such information and before I do that I have to know the legal basis of that. Sending personal details is already a risk via internet especially credit card number. HM already stores data in relation to credit card details and owner of such card, so why the need of the documents. Never had any similar problems with other hosts. Is it because I am from Europe?

The only reason they should ask you to send in that type of information is to verify your identity if you are asking them to turn on Shell access (via SSH). Because of the damage that can be caused by allowing someone SSH access to their servers, they take great strides in knowing to whom they give this type of access.

In case you happen to do something to actually damage their servers, they will have info on you and might be able to pursue restitution in legal ways.

If you don't need SSH access to your account, then you don't have to send this information into HM.
