Let's say that I signed up with hostmonster with the primary domain name "example.com". Then I purchased another secondary domain name "anotherdomainname.com". Now I want to switch the primary and secondary. So that "anotherdomainname.com" is now the primary and the "example.com" is now the secondary, with the eventual though of deleting "example.com".

Is that possible? I know that a lot of internal structures like the username and directory structure is based off of the primary domain name.

It is possible by contacting support. However I believe that your account gets reset so you'd need to ensure you had a backup of the site and then restore it after the change over.

I'm not sure if the Hostmonster account name would change or not but support can advise you on that.

Is this what one would refer to as a domain alias?

No. I would think a domain alias is similar to a parked domain.

about the switch, I believe part of the reason HM resets the account is because everything changes, including the username. I don't know if the user id changes, but I do know HM doesn't like to do this.

If they fight you on it, don't let it get to you. It's a huge pain to switch the primary domain with another one ...

I guess that is why HM give you the primary domain as free during signup. So that people will just keep it even if they are not using it.

Problem is of course is that if you use SSL (not shared) then its only available on the primary domain.

Would be nice if you could have different SSL settings for different subdomains...
