i have same problem (via different circumstances) as similar post earlier today by 'leareed' and assumed i should start a new thread due to differences... so, i went through the setup as what i believe to be normal, then installed wordpress setting up a skeleton page, but when i enter the site name in the browser i get the index of files... i am able to invoke the page from within wordpress so it is out there and ok, and i did try several "fixes" that i ran across mostly in the wordpress codex related to subject "Giving WordPress its Own Directory While Leaving Your Blog in the Root Directory", all to no avail... i feel that this is something simple that i am not aware that i need in the root -- yes this is the first time i have set up a website with a webhost... any input would be vastly appreciated to save calling support...and avoid further drudgery of muddling through the dreaded codex, reading the tower of babble "instructions"...

have you named your homepage index.html? it's really common that people forget to do this.

well, no, and it's not a case of forgetting as much as not knowing... part of the previously mentioned codex procedure entailed moving the index.php (and .htaccess) file to the root directory -- isnt this index file the same file in a diff language, or are you saying that i ALSO need an index.html file (which is my home page renamed) in addition to that? more to the point, is this scenario explained in simple concise terms somewhere other than in the wordpress "tower of codex"? can you recommend a good concise clear source of pertinent setup info such that i would not have to bother you good people? sorry about the lack of expertise, i do appreciate your help...

i think that any index would do (including index.php), i'm not too experienced too, but you can check if your index.php is all lower case if it is then i do not how else to help you sorry but there will be others more experienced than me to help you.
