I tried for hours trouble shooting and it just won't upload. It either give the dreaded xml error or says there is an issue with the server. Joomla doesn't give anything in terms of troubleshooting documentation. Any ideas before I pay someone?

Two things you might want to consider:
1. Look in the template zip file and check to make sure the xml file is actually there. Sometimes, template makers will either forget to add it, or will place it in a location where Joomla! doesn't look. Often, moving the xml file to the "root" or the zip file will fix this problem
2. There is an issue with Joomla! versions you have to pay attention to. If you have a Joomla! 1.0.X installation and are trying to install a template designed for Joomla! 1.5.X Native, you will get an error. I'm not sure what type of error to look for, but the two systems are not compatible. The same is true if you are trying to install a 1.0.X template into a J! 1.5.X installation that isn't running Legacy mode.
If neither of this two suggestions fixes your issue, you might want to contact the template designer and ask them. By the way, where did you get the template, and did you pay for it?
