I'm trying (unsuccessfully) to install the Front Page Extensions to a subdomain. Is this possible?

Yes, you can install FrontPage extensions into a subdomain, provided they have already been installed into the main domain first.

Thanks for the response sdasevne. Now if I go ahead and install the Front Page Extensions on my main page, (after backing up my .htaccess which I read will get clobbered), can I just ignore them on the main page and only use them with the subdomain? Will the extensions cause problems with other 'normal' main page actions? ie: I just want to use FP Extensions within one narrow subdomain and don't really want them having any effect anywhere else.

Thanks

You can install FrontPage extensions in any domain and never use them. They cause no problems, so I routinely install them in case I ever decide to use them. Some of my subdomains are FrontPage, some not, but for consistency, I always install extensions.

There's a warning that I will lose all .htaccess files when I install FP extensions. Is this really true? .htaccess files even in directories into which I have NOT installed the extensions? This could create quite a backup problem.

During installation, you'll see progress messages telling you what files are being updated. I don't remember seeing lots of htaccess files, only one in the main directory. But since I never update the htaccess files myself, I use the ones that FrontPage installs. Maybe someone else can let us know what htaccess files are replaced. Or, how about setting up a test subdomain, install the extensions in it and see what happens?

im quessing the problem is installing to the main domain which you said you had to do first. ill bet Mr. Newman (sorry... MAD RULES ;) ) has a lot of folders in his public_html folder and each has their own homemade htaccess file in it. eg: backing up for the initial extension installation

Yup that is the problem. I guess I really DO worry.
