I am ready to add a new domain to my account. Does the control panel add a new public_html folder along with the purchase of a new domain or do I manage seperate sites within one main public_html folder? Is there any info on how best to organized the files within the public_html folder, such as flash folders and image folders?

When you add a new domain, it creates a new directory in your original public_html directory. During the sign-up progress cpanel will suggest a directory name, usually newdomain.com but you can edit that to what works best for you.

I've been meaning to ask about that. I've recently bought a new domain but I haven't found anything in my public_html directory.

Did you purchase your new domain name from Hostmonster? If not, then you will have to modify the domain settings to point the nameservers to HM nameservers. Then you have to go through the process of adding the new domain to your CPanel/HM account (Addon Domain).

If you did purchase fron Hostmonster, you will still have to add your new domain via Addon or Parked Domain links in your CPanel.

Understand the difference:

A parked domain is one that is used to reference the same site as your primary domain ...

mydomain.com (primary)
mydomain.net (parked)

Both of the domian names above will go to the same place, a.k.a. will be the same site using two different names.

An addon domain is like having an entirely new website

mydomain.com (primary)
mydomain.org (addon)

The domain names above will point to what looks like completely different sites. In reality, the addon domain is serverd from a folder inside your primary public_html directory ....

mydomain.com loads the index.html file inside the public_html directory

mydomain.org loads the index.html file inside the public_html/mydomain.org directory.

In other words, the root "/" of mydomain.org would be /home/cpanelaccount/public_html/mydomain.org and the root of your primary domain, mydomain.com would be /home/cpanelaccount/public_html

I hope that helped clear things up. Log into your HM account and make sure to add the domain you just purchased as either an addon or parked domain, whichever your needs require.

Based on another thread that seemed in to indicate that they didn't have any default files created for an add-on domain, I'm wondering if HostMonster have changed something meaning that when you get a new account / new add-on domain, you don't have any default files...

I believe you are correct. You won't get all the error pages you normally get with your primary account, but you will get a cgi-bin folder. I believe the reason for this is that when you addon a new domain, HM treats is as a subdomain of the primary site.

You can test this by navigating to addon.primary.domain to see if the addon domain's site shows up. It should.

The only question I have is, since the addon domain is "sort of" treated as a subdomain of the primary site, and HM does not allow subdomains of subdomains, then can you create subdomains of your addon domain?

I would imagine the answer to that questions would help define the differences between an addon domaind and a subdomain, besides the use of an actual domain name ...

my head is spinning now ...

How do I make it so my second domain is the main account? Do I contact Host Monster or can I do it manually?

The MAIN domain you created when you signed up can NOT be changed.

Your Addon-Domain will be as well in your public_html folder, but it's working totally independent.
Nobody will see your main domain if he enters the addon-domain url.

Actually, the main domain you created when you signed up can be changed, however, HM has to reset it for you, and you will lose any data and information you've created unless you back it up and save it to your hard disc.

It's more practical to simply add-on your second domain, unless there is an extenuating circumstance.
