Problem with domain transfer

Hi,
I have a problem with my domain registrar (1and1.com). I am trying to transfer my three domains over to hostmonster, opened an account here a few days ago, and before closing my 1and1 package, I copied the authorization codes for my domains, and entered them here.
Then I closed my account at 1and1.com.
There seems to be a problem with the transfer right now, because it seems that when I closed my hosting package, it triggered the domains' expiration process, which I didn't know was an option since the domains belong to me, and I own them, right?
Well, I called 1and1 and they want $40 per domain to reverse the process they call the "redemption period".
Shocking! They refuse to transfer my domains here.
What do I do? Is it legal to expire domains that are owned by me without my consent?

No offense here but it was your mistake, I'm dealing with the process of transferring one domain from godaddy.com to name.com.
They said that the domain tranfer could last up to 10 business days, the mistake was that you closed your 1and1.com account, you should have done this AFTER moving your domains to hostmonster.com.
