you have to have more than 10 posts in the forums before you are allowed to upload avatar photos for your account.
There is also a size limit to your avatar once the post minimum has been reached:
80 x 80 pixels or 19.5KB (whichever is smaller).
~regards, and welcome to the community!
P.S. there are several posts in the forum here that deal with this exact problem. I suggest using th search feature in the future to facilitate getting your answers more quickly.

I just uploaded a 124x124 9kb jpg. This post is a test to see if it worked. I guess not. It is showing up in my User CP ->Edit Profile Picture.
Hey! if this is the most important thing we have to worry about today we must be doing pretty well! :)

Greetings.
I think you are confusing yourself as to how this works. Let me try to clear some things up ...
1. Your profile picture is not the same thing as your avatar. The profile picture is what people see when they go to your profile page. You avatar, which is what you are trying to upload, is an image that shows in all your posts.
2. Your avatar limitations are: 80px x 80px with a file size of anything less than 19.5KB. Your profile picture limitations are: 100px x 100px with a file size of anything less than 64KB.
If you want an image to show up in the posts you make, be sure to upload an "avatar", not a "profile picture".
Having said that, I'm interested in learning how you were able to upload a picture that is larger than the limitations state for your profile picture ...
~regards

d'oh! the profile pic and the avatar pic are two separate configurations. I uploaded a profile pic thinking it would also serve as my avatar. But of course, I was incorrect.
