but I can't figure it out so here's goes.

My username for the control panel seems to be a "generated" username and not the one I thought I had entered. While I can see clearly how to change passwords I cannot for the life of me figure out how to change my username.
a pointer in the right direction might not save my blushes but it would be greatly appreciated.

Hostmoster has assigned you a user name and it is not changeable.

correct. Your username is related to your domain name. Typically, it is the first eight (8) characters of your domain name, though it could be slightly different depending on what your domain name is.

Make sure your cpanel password is really, REALLY strong, because if people know your domain name, they have half of your cpanel login.

That's a good point about people knowing your username. I once hosted with someone else who took like the first 5 letters and added a couple numberic digits to it to form the username. That seemed odd to me at the time, but in hindsight was one more level of security to protect their users.

Thanks for the replies people, my username is nothing like my domain name!! it's more like launch codes for a ballistic missile (slight exaggeration I admit) but still nothing like my domain. but hey, if I can't change it then there's no point in me whining over it so onward and upward.

You probably could contact support and ask them to change it but I think that would mean that the entire site structure would need to be recreated and therefore if you've already got something setup, probably not a good idea :)
