To reclaim disk space, I'm thinking of de-installing Java on my Windows XP system. What, if anything, will stop working if I do that? I see lots of articles on the web that say you don't really need Java if you're not writing anything in Java, and I think Microsoft even stopped including Java with its operating systems, right?

Nothing on your local system should stop working if you uninstall Java. You will not be able to access Unlimited FTP in cPanel without Java installed, but I think that's the only applet used here.

other applets in other websites will not work with Java either, but if you don't visit websites that load java, then you shouldn't have to worry about it.

...unless you are using applications that use Java. Without knowing what applications you have installed, its hard to say what will happen :D

So I'll try deleting it, then if something complains, just download and install the latest version from Sun. That should be safe, right?

Should be fairly safe - worse comes to worse, you may need to reinstall some Java-using-apps after reinstalling Java but thats worst case...

Rather than delete java outright, I would recommend renaming the java directory...that way, if you determine you really need it after all, you can easily rename it back rather than reloading/reinstalling.reconfiguring.

Thanks, all. I moved it onto a CD, and all seemed OK. So I moved it back and then uninstalled it.
