If I buy a $2 domain name from godaddy, will i be able to transfer
it to hostmonster and use the files from my existing account?
How do I do this? I would appreciate some help.
I really don't want to pay the $150 for another two year
committment for a new domain name....

Well, I doubt Hostmonster can beat the $2 price at Godaddy, but you should not have to purchase an entirely new account to get a new domain name. You should be able to buy a new domain from HM and just attach it to your current account. I think HM charges $10 or $20 a year (I'm just guessing righ now) for another domain name.
Having said that, you should be able to transfer the domain from GoDaddy to HM as long as it meets the requirement for HM domains (you will have to check to make sure it ends with .com, .org, .net ... there are others, but again, I can't remember all of them).

How do I transfer the thing to my account? Will I be
able to use all my files? If I could then, I would have
to use the directory names in my home account?

If you buy a domain name from GoDaddy, you would just have to change the name servers to those belonging to Hostmonster.
Then, inside your Hostmonster account's CPanel, you would go to the Addon Domain setion and add the new domain name. This will create a directory for the new domain inside the public_html folder with the name of your new domain.
To use your new domain, upload all your files associated with that domain to the folder inside your public_html folder.
There is a great tutorial in the User Submitted Tutorials thread at the top of this forum that lays all this out. I recommend you read it to get a better understanding of what you need to do.

ok, I've read[ed] the posting on transferring...
just making sure here. my hostmonster account is xtendedfamily.com
and the root is at /home/xtendedf/default_html.
I buy a $2.99 domain name from godaddy and point the nameserver
at godaddy to ns1.hostmonster.com. i go to the control panel
and transfer the godaddy name to hostmonster. after a few days,
my godaddy domain name is transferred.
does this mean the when i type in the new url, it will point to
/home/xtendedf/defaul_html? if i have an index.html they will
be served up the xtendedfamily.com and my new domain i transferred
from godaddy?
it kinda makes it hard to manage doesn't it? if my new domain name
is xyq.com, i can't just pass it around, i'll have to tell people to
use xyq.com/mypage.html, because if i have an index.html in the
root directory, xyq.com will serve it up?
how are people doing this? please tell me.

I am going to close this thread as the other one, pointed to by this link:
http://www.hostmonsterforum.com/showthread.php?t=2006
is the tutorial that discusses this very subject. Instead of having two almost identical threads, I am going to keep everything together. Further inquiries on domain transfers should be submitted at the above link.
Thanks!
