When you created your database and user in CPanel, did you:
Add the user to the database and give that user the proper permissions?
When telling phpbb3 what your database information was, did you enter the correct names for the database and username? If you did not do either of the above steps, then you will have to first add your user to the database and give that user all permissions. From the error you provided (thanks by the way), it seems your problem is not that, but we won't know until you can connect to the database.
When you create your databases and usernames in CPanel, you input the database name as such, phpbb3. CPanel adds a portion of your domain name to the front of that like so, yourdoma_phpbb3.
During your installation, you will have to provide the ENTIRE name, including the protion of your domain name as shown above. This will have to be done the same way for your user as well.
So in your install scripts, when phpbb3 asks for your database AND username, you will provide something similar to this:
database name: yourdoma_phpbb3
username: yourdoma_bb3user
See if these settings will work for you. Remember to change yourdoma to the proper name for your database. It should be your CPanel username, or the first 8 characters of your domain name.
~regards, and welcome to the Community!
Thanks Shadmego...
but another error message is popping up:
Could not connect to the database, see error message below.
Access denied for user 'styledim_phpbb3'@'host171.hostmonster.com' (using password: YES)
Username was styledim_phpbb3
and password was correct yet still no connection...
Database server hostname or DSN: is host171 i think.. lol
Coz it sayd on Cpanel homepage.. Server Name: host171
So i dunno whats wrong :(
RBK
Make the host171.hostmonster.com bit to be localhost
That should probably help...
Works great now... thanks guys :)
No worries - glad to hear its working.

I just purchased a hosting package last night and got all my details to access my C Panel and would also like to use PHPBB to create a forum. Im not sure whats next. I have downloaded the PHPBB zip on my local PC directory and transfer it using File Manager on my Cpanel to public.ftp then extracted it. Thats pretty much it as Im now stuck my knowledge with programs like this is very limited. Any help would be appreciated.
Ive tried watching the flashtutorial about how to install PHPBB and I can follow everything except when it says "Point your browser to the install.php file. The URL might look something like: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/install/install.php"
My site it www.hobbymuna.com, so I tried typing http://www.hobbymuna.com/forum/install/install.php and says webpage cannot be found. Please help.
