View Full Version : Opening Ports 2077 and 2078
I have webdisk loaded on my desktop, but it says that I have to open ports 2077 and 2078.
I opened them up on my router, but still nothing. I get an error message.
Any ideas? Oh and I'm using Vista (if that makes any difference)
TIA

Maybe Vista has a built in firewall, if so you might have to open the ports there too. In your router, you could forward those ports to the LAN address of your PC.

I think you will have to change Windows firewall settings:
Click start orb -then-
Click Administration Tools -then-
Click Windows Firewall with Advanced security -that will open-
Click Inbound rules or Outbound rules (or both depending on what you are doing) -then-
click add a new rule
You will see this screen.

You should be able to figure it out from there.

Actually this is an issue with Vista as I am having the same problem. Trying going to Start/Computer/ then Click on Map Network Drive.
Type in https://yourdomain.com:2078 enter in your user and password and that should be it but it is not working.
here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=17C36612-632E-4C04-9382-987622ED1D64&displaylang=en) is a link for a patch for vista but it doesn't work
If you get it working please let me know
Well, I did what the second post said to do and I got further in the process then before. Now my problem is: it asks for your user name and password, but it's not accepting them (I was using the HM un and pw)...
So any ideas from there?
I have my website up from using unlimited FTP, but I've read that using Web Disk is easier because you can drag and drop.

That is where it sticks for me too. This is an issue with Vista so hopefully the SP1 package will take care of it.

I still can't get it to open the web disk. I can't get through the process you have the instructions for. When I put in the web location, it tells me the location does not exsist. I tried putting in http://thardin.com but does not allow. Got to be I am putting in the wrong location, but how do I know the location? Is it a location on my hard drive or a location on the web @ hostmonster?

Did you setup the web disk in cPanel yet?
(its under the files section)

Hey guys, im having trouble with this too. Was using the webdisk fine but got a new laptop which came with vista, and now im having real trouble updating my site. Followed the steps in the video but when it comes to entering the 'internet or network address' I still get the select certificate box, followed by an 'The folder you entered did not appear valid. Please try another.' error.
Someone also said on another thread...
"As far as your certificate errors, you are getting these because you are most likely connecting to your domain name (expected) using a secure protocol. Since you are on a shared host and don't have your own SSL certificate, your are using the host default certificate which is in the name of hostXX.hostmonster.com. This is because the certificate is created using the name of the host. So connecting to https://www.yourdomain.com would produce a certificate error (name mismatch) when trying to connect using a secure protocol. If you connect using the domain name https://hostXX.hostmonster.com/~username, then you would not run into the certificate issues you mentioned."
However I have tried this, but still without joy. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

I hate vista. but im stuck with it - so here's the scoop:
When trying to install a webdisk folder via the add network location feature, you follow the prompts and you get that dreaded box asking for a certificate.
Solution:
Step 1:
go on the server (perhaps you have cpanel from your host ,as I do), and create an SSL key there. WIth the SSL key, you create a SSL certificate. You now copy/paste the certificate (bunch of random letters) into a .crt file and save it on the desktop.
This is a very geeky process and I'm glad cpanel makes it pretty easy to figure out, if you host allows you to manage your own SSL certificates. If they do, it shows under SECURITY category in cpanel "SSL/TSL Manager". Remember: first you have to make a key, and use that key to create the certificate. Then d/l the certificate as .crt to local computer.
Step 2:
Open ports 2077 and/or 2078 (whatever it may be) in vista: search internet for "vista opening ports" and find the microsoft support page showing you how.
Step 3:
import certificate you downloaded into your certificate store in vista. Again search internet for microsoft support page explaining "how to import certificates in vista".
NOW YOU ARE READY TO MAKE YOUR FOLDER.
boy that's asenine, if you ask me. But it gets worse!!!
Set up your https folder (not Http! it's got an "S" at the end) like so: https://www.domainname.com:2078/ and click next.
You should see the certificate in the box now. if not, go back to step 1.
NOW COMES THE SILLY BIT!!!
You're being asked for login so enter it (should be login you made when setting up the webdisk folder in cpanel, it's usually different from ftp login, by the way). Then it asks again, as if you entered login incorrectly. Dont be fooled. just enter again.
Follow prompts, accept certificate, etc... Then windows does something invisible for a while. Get a candybar, or pet your dog, whatever), then windows ASKS AGAIN to login. Like, huh? Yes. Just log in again.
In total, I think it asks seven(!) times to enter login information. Insane. Crazy! unacceptably cumbersome. Whatever. Just follow prompts.
Eventually you will see your final prompt to name the network location. Then IT ASKS TO LOG IN AGAIN!!!!!! Seriously, what is wrong with this thing? But hey, whatever... keep typing your credentials. Curse vista while you're at it if it makes you feel better.
Finally your location should show up under web folders in the explorer tree.
Whew! Took me 1/2 hour to figure this out, so I hope you can do it quicker.
