Hi,
I'm a high school teacher who wants to set up individual accounts for his students. My questions are these:
1. Would I give each student a subdomain?
2. If so, how could I establish a password for each student?
3. Would they be able to upload with FTP? How would I do this?
Thanks

Is this going to be a site for your students to create and upload websites?
My College creates passwords for all their students. Their template for creating usernames and passwords is:
username = initials (firstname, middlename, lastname - fml) + last 4 of their social.
If you don't have access to this, you can use month digits and day digits of their birthdays.
password = last 6 of social.
Again, if you don't have this type of access, then you can think of another template to use for creating passwords.
What you do with the site will dictate how to set things up. If you are using the account as a way to instruct students on how to design and manage websites, and to give them their own space on the site, you can set up individual subdomains. You can then create FTP accounts for each subdomain and set up jails for each student so they can't mess up anyone else's section.
If you set it up like this, they would have access to their account only via FTP and they could use any standard FTP program. I like FileZilla myself, but there are others out there that will work.
~regards, and good luck with your class!

1: Each having a subdomain is a great idea, makes organizing them much easier. They would also automatically get their own folders.
2: You could use the .htaccess file to add a password challenge if someone attempts to access the folder from the web. If there is a better solution I am sure someone else will mention it.
3: You can create FTP accounts through the CPANEL. You can also set those accounts to be only able to access a particular folder.

how many students do you have? Hostmonster now only lets you have 999 subdomains.

I bet some schools dont even have 999 students, let alone that many in one class...

I think the big question is, what exactly do you want the students to do with this webspace? This will likely dictate how to organize your student accounts.

You can't establish a password for each student. If they were to upload with FTP, they would have to log on as you.

That is not true at all. It is possible to set up FTP accounts for a number of users that have access to the site for uploading/downloading requirements. You can also create "jail cells" that will restrict where the newly created FTP accounts can go to on the site. It would effectively limit which directories students have access to.

True, but how many can you make?

HM allows for AT LEAST 9,999 ftp accounts, though it could be unlimited. You would have to ask support for the exact number ...

Thanks for all of the advice and input. I just need to work on it myself a bit to figure it out.
