8. Install FDSE search. While not a part of FrontPage, the FDSE search tool is an important part of all my websites, and I wanted to be sure that it would be set up and function correctly at the new host. This is a free search engine that is easy to integrate into your website, and it builds an index of all the search words in your web pages to allow users to search for pages containing specific terms. Unlike other free searches, it does not link out to an external website to do the search, but maintains its own index right in your domain. It has the best automatic installation tool around; just go to xav.com, click on FDSE tool, and click INSTALL. It figures out what features your hosting service has, what versions of Perl, where the libraries are located, etc. When you click on INSTALL, enter as your FTP User name sub1@main.com (your add-on name @ your main name), and for FTP password, enter the same password you used to set up your add-on domain, probably the same as for your main domain.
9. Test and configure FDSE. After the FDSE search engine is installed, go to sub1.com/search/search.pl?Mode=Admin to set the search configuration parameters. This is the control panel for FDSE, where you must set a password the first time (again, I use a common password for all domains and products to make it easier). Click on the User Interface menu item to set search parameters and how you want the results displayed. It's one of the easiest-to-use control panels there is; it's very well-documented and has both Frequent Questions, and Help Documentation, in addition to a User Forum where you can find answers to most questions.
10. Customize FDSE. The FDSE control panel allows you a great deal of flexibility in customizing the search and results pages to make them look like the rest of your site. Anyone with a little HTML or CSS knowledge can easily edit and change the Header and Footer templates right from the control panel. In addition, you can modify the items returned in a search and influence how they are presented in the returned list.
