How you change it depends on who you bought the domain name from... but basically the provider of the domain name should have some form of control panel that you can select what name servers are set for your domain.

Otherwise if they don't, you may need to contact their support people...

The only servers you have direct access to are the MX nameservers (email, or Mail Xchange). If you want to change the CNAME servers (the ones used to point domain names to the right place, you will have to contact support. They will be more than happy to help you, though I'm not sure about th terms of service ... it's been awhile since I've read them, but again, they will be able to help you out there too.

i see. but all i want to do is create an addon domain. (i was under the impression i had to change the nameserver to do that) so are you saying i have to contact support just to create an addon?

Well, you have to purchase the domain name from somewhere if you want it to be an addon domain. If you want to buy it from HM, then yes, you will have to contact them about it. If you purchase it from some other company, say GoDaddy, then you should be able to change the CNAME entry by yourself.

If you buy the extra domain name from HM and want to point it to another server, then you will have to contact HM to change the CNAME.

If you purchase the addon domain name from GoDaddy, or another entity, then you should not have to contact HM support to get the name set up. You will just have to configure your site to accomodate the extra domain.

Here is the link from the helpdesk at HM that steps your through the process of adding an addon/parked domain:

Isn't it pretty cheap and easy to do an addon domain using HM? I think that can be done thru the control panel alone (and for like $10) - I could be wrong?

... but if you're wanting to do a sub-domain - that would be a very different (and very easy) story.

1. Buy hosting and "mymaindomain.com" at HostMonster.
2. Buy the name "myaddondomain.com" at GoDaddy.
3. Using GoDaddy's control panel, change nameservers for "myaddondomain.com" to ns1.hostmonster.com and ns2.hostmonster.com.
4. Wait 24 hours.
5. Using cPanel for "mymaindomain.com", ADD domain "myaddondomain.com". The ADD procedure will check to make sure that the registered nameservers point to hostmonster, and if they do, the domain will be added.
6. Upload your webpages to "myaddondomain.com".

...
6. Upload your webpages to "myaddondomain.com".

Which should now be a directory under "mymaindomain.com".

thanks for the help guys.

ultimately i want people to type in "www.myaddondomain.com" and i don't want them to see "www.mydomain.com" in the address bar. i want them to see "www.myaddondomain.com" in the address bar

so if i follow these steps...

6. Upload your webpages to "myaddondomain.com".

i can do that?

just want to confirm before i buy a godaddy domain.

Yes, you get a free main domain from HostMonster, then you can add any number of addon domains which you can purchase at GoDaddy or anywhere else you like. You then use the control panel where you purchased these names to point them to HostMonster. I've added about 15 domains in the past 15 months, all with NO problems whatsoever.
