Ahhhhh! Please help!

Okay, please bear with me, I need some serious help. I have used very basic html and I have used dumbed down free hosting sites like bravehost before, but this hostmonster is so very complicated. Firstly, I cannot seem to link to any of my public ftp files. I would like to link to them so others can download these zip files from my site. I uploaded them using Core to my downloads folder located in my public_ftp folder and enabled anonymous ftp access (I think). I tried downloading them myself w/a download program @ several possible links and none of them work! They say file not found. I have tried: http://www.sitename/downloads/filename.zip, http://www.downloads@sitename.com/filename.zip, http://www.sitename/public_ftp/downloads/filename.zip, http://www.sitename/downloads/filename.zip, http://sitename/downloads/filename.zip, http://downloads@sitename.com/filename.zip, http://sitename/public_ftp/downloads/filename.zip, ftp.downloads@sitename.com/filename.zip, ftp.sitename.com/downloads/filename.zip I even tried moving the files directly to my public_ftp file and all the links like http://www.sitename/filename.zip, and so on. I have tried every possible link I could conceive of and nothing has worked! What am I doing wrong?!?!?! I tried calling the 1-866 number, but that guy just sent me a link that didn't work and he really seemed to have no clue what I was talking about. He kept telling me how to access them myself. I just felt really stupid trying to explain when I don't even really know any terminology or what I'm really doing, although I can generally figure these sort of things out on my own, just not in this case.
I'm so frustrated at this point I don't know what to do.
Secondly, I'm having trouble getting my template to work. I tried the free web site builder hostmonster offers, but it gave me the error that I cannot use div. I tried using notepad, but The gif files associated with it do not show up and it says something about not being able to hot link them, so I tried uploading and linking the gif files associated with my template, but that doesn't work either, they don't even show up at all, which clearly proves that I have absolutely no clue how to link anything from this account! I can't find any paths. So, I switched to Nvu. But I couldn't get that to work either. Please, good people, help me! I beg you, help me! Is there maybe a program out there that traces or finds you path for you or anything? If not, there should be.
Also, I would like to have many secondary pages which are linked to my index page, but, once again, I cannot link to them! So, I've been unable to get even the first page of my site up and running!
I'm about to scream having poured over this and gone through the "getting starting wizard" over and over, hoping I missed something. Reading post after post and trying things I've seen suggested. "Asking Jeeves" and searching everywhere I could think to find the answer. I'm at my wits end. It's been days and I cannot figure this out. There has to be someone out there who can/will help me. Please!

First point:

You need to put them in public_html NOT public_ftp. Once they are there, put them anywhere you like. HM allows Apache to show you directory browsing aswell :)

Second point:

It sounds to me you put these 'secondary' files in public_ftp aswell. Again, these all have to go in public_html.

And honestly, there is no need to even use public_ftp folder. Even if you want to make new users and their own folders, its 100x easier to make the user login under the public_html directory.

PSS - For the love of Mike, PLEASE use paragraphs next time lol.

Wow, thanks I'll try that now. I didn't even think of that.

I did put all of my pages in public_html, though. I thought you had to put files in ftp and pages in html, for some reason. No idea why.

Oh my, I had a feeling it just had to be something so simple! lol. My downloads work wonderfully now.

I feel really stupid, but I love you! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I'll figure out the rest now.
