I have uploaded to directly into my public_ftp folder 4 files that I want to be downloadable for visitors.
files are: Domain_org_blank.exe , email_org_blank.exe , picture_org_blank.exe , site_promotion_links.doc

Then I made links who looks like
www.bonus-webhosting.com/site_promotion_links.doc
www.bonus-webhosting.com/site_promotion_links.doc/
www.bonus-webhosting.com/public_ftp/site_promotion_links.doc

No one works. All do give the a 404 error message, address can't be found

I made this exactly as explained in a thread I found. SO WHY THIS DON'T WORK ?
Somebody can give me a help here.

A second problem are files I want restricted access to. I have created a folder above public_ftp and uploaded all files - OK, done.
Do I have now to root over my Home directory ? or over my domain to this folder/files ?
And how can I make it work that they not accessable for all ? If someone knows the link he will able to go there without a problem, correct ?

you need to upload them in your "public_html" folder.

Great help, now it works. I don't know why always they say to upload to public_ftp ??
You can give me a clue to the second question. I have uploaded files to a folder bonusebooks under the /home/bonusweb directory but ABOVE public_html. I want to give restricted access to those files for people who payed over Paypal a fee. How my link has to look like ?
www.bonus-webhosting.com/bonuseebooks/filename.zip ?? or
www.bonus-webhosting.com/home/bonusweb/bonuseebooks/filename.zip ???
and if a user received once the link, he always can access this download ?
Sorry to boughter you, but you are the first person who could help me with that.
Thanks a lot

RDM- thanks a lot, great help at the open downloads, now it works. I don't know why always they say to upload to public_ftp ??

NOW A OTHER PROBLEM - I need a solution to this question.
I uploaded zip files (e-books) to a folder I have created bonusebooks under my directory /home/bonusweb ABOVE the public_html folder.
I want to give restricted download access to those files for people who payed over Paypal to me. How my link root has to look like ? No one of the links I made works
http://www.bonus-webhosting.com/bonusebooks/filename.zip ?? or
http://www.bonus-webhosting.com/home/bonusweb/bonusebooks/filename.zip ???
I have tried all possibilities, no way
and, if a user received once a linkcode, he always can access the download later on or give it to a third party, right ?
Perhaps I can get RDM's help again as his hint worked perfect.
Thanks a lot

All of your things that you want to be accessible from your website, have to be in the public_html folder. Anything above that folder, people from the website will not be able to access it.

What you do is create a folder inside of public_html and call it bonusebooks and then put a password on that directory. That way only people that have paid can have access to that folder. You can set up as many uses and passwords as you like.

To do this, you login to cPanel >> Under the 'Security' click on 'Password Protect Directories' >> Select 'Web Root (public_html/www)' and Click Go >> Click on the folder name >> Follow the instructions.

RDM, are you here ?
I've made what you told. Set up a folder /freebonus in public_html and put all 12 files in that folder.
Then I 'password protect' that folder over cPanel. I set 7 user names and passwords. AS well I put LEECH PROTECT to that folder
But accessing now the page, www.bonus-webhosting.com/freebonus , get me just a 401 error that I don't have authorization.
Shouldn't I get automatically a form where I can submit user name and password to get access ?? Do I have to build this form ?
Thanks again for your help

I tried the link and it prompts for credentials fine. You probably have your authentication settings set differently.
If you are using IE, click Tools -> Internet Options -> Security tab -> Custom Level... and scroll all the way down to the bottom, to the Authentication Options. Choose the last option, 'Prompt for Username and Password', if it's not already selected. OK out of it all, and try again.

Hey LinFox, thanks for Hint.
In Firefox downloads works, but in IE not, even after I changed settings. STRANGE.
Does this mean that the downloads just don't work in MY IE ?? I hope so as I would have resolved one of my problems.
Thanks for your response.

I have found that in HM, some things that I do, I have to exit out of IE and delete my temporary files in Internet Options. You may need to do this. Hope it helps, I know this is an old post from last year, but surely someone else has had this problem and nothing was past the last post.
