A strange question about copyrights

At the bottom of just about all websites, you see the copyright, year, all rights reserved but when it comes to the year, does that suppose to stay the same year or does it change when a new year comes?

If you hold the copyright to your content, then you put the latest year that the copyright has been renewed. Otherwise, the copyright info is fake and meaningless.
