Try live chat again, then tell them about what you just said here. I'm sure they will take care of it in a professional manner. :)

what is down - hostmonster or your site - I don't understand how you are having this much trouble - The VERY limited number of times it has happened to me I call and they are usually already aware of the problem or if not they get right on it and reboot the server. VERY little difficulties in this department.

Glynn, I would suggest you 'call' the toll free number - tell them about this issue and I AM SURE that they will check on the problem I have NEVEr had a problem with them investigating and resolving a site issue!

More Later,

Susan

I always use the Live Chat. They are very helpful.

If your problem is serious and need timely attention, call their Toll Free number.

You may want to download Skype to make the call if your operator charges on cross country Toll Free call. Skype makes it free and you can talk over the internet and look at the screen at the same time.

you don't have to buy any software or hardware - requires high speed internet and that is it - takes them a few days to set you up but otherwise is GREAT

This forum is a great idea. As far as speed, site down, etc, I'm sure it varies from member to member. I'm guessing, but I'm sure most of us here are on a shared host and each of those shared host will have varied addresses. Not sure how many share my address, but the point the poster brought up is one I would like to explore.

I belong to several other hosting packages and by far hostmonster is the slowest. All my hosts are shared packages. I have the least amount of code on my hostmonster pages, yet it is the slowest.

I have been so discouraged, that now I only use hostmonster to experiment. With only 3 or 4 page sites that are super slow, I'd fear putting a large site (3000 or more pages) on one of my domains to be used by my clients at hostmonter. They would leave. For example, I'm about to experiment with joomla new beta 1.5. I'll probably install on hostmonster to check it out and if I want to use it for customers, I will put on one of my other hosts where it will run fast enough to keep my customers happy.

I have called and discussed this several times and at best there may be a temporary fix. Usually a reboot will do the job, but within a day or two I'm right back to a slow site.

The people at hostmonster are very nice and I do think they try. But I have come to the conclusion that I will never use hostmonster for anything serious. I have huge sites on other shared servers that load almost instantly while a two or three page site on hostmonster can take up to 10 seconds with a broadband connection. Must customers would leave if that was the norm and stop visitng the site all together.

It wouldn't be bad if this only happen every once in awhile, but not the case. Before I visited this forum, I checked out two of my sites on hostmonster. One is a one page html page that crawls and the other is a 3 or 4 page php site that crawls. If I had a full ecommerce site with 10,000 pictures lke I do on my other host, it probably could not handle it nor do I want to spend the time to create such a large site that customers wouldn't visit anyhow. Nope, I'll stick to the 3 or 4 page test for now and if that doesn't pass mustard, no way am I going to spend time building a larger site.

I did have a discussion with one tech at hostmonster on this subject that probably tells the story. During the call, he went to talked to his admin. It was determined that a resource hog was eating up most of the shared resources. Most hosts have software to detect this, but in this case the tech person told me it was not working properly.

What you have to understand that the resouce hog could only be on the one shared IP address that I use (not sure how many share a address), while on another shared address it could be working fine. It is one of those things only the host would know. Usually the resource hog is a spammer using code to send out thousands of emails.

Anyways, for what it is worth, if your site has slowed down, good chance their is a resource hog using the resources of your shared address. You have to get hostmonster tech to tell the admin to kick the resource hog off so things run normally. However, it isn't something I want to have to call everytime I go to my site so I probably won't be using hostmonster in the future. But I will say these guys are outstanding people, they just need to get their servers with all shared ip addresses working like clock work so everything runs like it should.

cheers

I agree 100% with this experience. I am curious to know the other hosting companies you are using
